PSV and technical director De Jong parted ways over the sales policy dispute

PSV said a final farewell to technical director John de Jong on Friday night. His contract was terminated with immediate effect because the supervisory board did not have confidence in continuing the cooperation due to disagreements on the sales policy.

PSV’s supervisory board blames De Jong for ignoring an urgent recommendation to sell Cody Gakpo. The star player long seemed to be on his way to the Premier League for a million dollars, but he ended up staying at PSV.

According to A.D and VII De Jong, who was supported in his decisions by the entire board, went against CRV’s advice by keeping Gakpo. The latter wanted Gakpo or Ibrahim Sangaré to be sold for financial reasons in the 2022/2023 financial year.

“I had an assessment with the supervisory board after a hectic final week of the transfer window,” Marcel Brands, the club’s general manager, told reporters. “It appeared that there was a unanimous breach of trust in the rvc regarding De Jong’s performance.”

According to Brands, De Jong made the decision to leave on his own. “After a few days of reflection, John indicated that a much-needed form of safeguarding had been lost for him. We closed the deal with the utmost respect and sincerely wish John all the best.”

Every decision is made with the support of the entire Board of Directors.

De Jong, 45, has been on the board of PSV since October 2018, a club where he also has a past as a player and recruiter (in charge). In total, he spent 22 seasons with the 24-time national champions.

“I always put the sporting ambition of PSV first in everything, with an eye on the financial health of the club,” said De Jong, who still had a contract until the middle of 2024. “Every decision made this summer he had the support of the whole council.”

“This staff and this selection are able to make this season successful. As a PSV player, I have spent almost half of my life working at the club in various roles. I will continue to look after that.”

Mr. De Jong’s duties will be absorbed internally until the position is filled. Frank Arnesen, who recently left his position as technical director at Feyenoord, is said to be in line to succeed him. Between 1994 and 2004, the 65-year-old Dane was already PSV’s technical director.
